Gli elettori svizzeri hanno respinto le proposte per vietare i pesticidi sintetici in agricoltura. Allo storico referendum vince il “No”.
La maggioranza degli elettori svizzeri vuole ancora i pesticidi in agricoltura. È quanto emerge dai risultati del referendum che si è tenuto lo scorso fine settimana. Circa il 61% (per l’esattezza 60,68%) dei cittadini ha respinto le due iniziative che avrebbero imposto un divieto nazionale sui pesticidi sintetici entro 10 anni e messo fuori legge i generi alimentari importati prodotti utilizzando tali componenti.
I cittadini elvetici erano chiamati ad esprimere la loro opinione su diversi temi “caldi”: misure antiterrorismo, leggi Covid-19 e proposte per proteggere l’ambiente tramite il divieto dei pesticidi sintetici. L’approvazione delle proposte avrebbe reso la Svizzera pioniera livello internazionale sul piano della riduzione massiccia dell’uso di pesticidi, della tutela dell’ambiente e della qualità dell’acqua potabile. Ma, purtroppo, anche in questo caso a vincere sono state le lobby dell’agroindustria.
Sui pesticidi, in particolare, erano due iniziative: la prima, ‘Per una Svizzera libera dai pesticidi di sintesi’, prevedeva un bando nazionale entro 10 anni, con divieto di commercializzazione di cibi importati prodotti in questo modo; mentre la seconda, ‘Per acqua potabile pulita e cibo sano’ puntava a limitare i sussidi governativi alle sole aziende agricole che non utilizzano pesticidi e utilizzano antibiotici solo per curare gli animali malati (non dunque a scopo “preventivo”). Il referendum puntava ad eliminare anche la quantità di liquame utilizzato sui campi, e quindi potenzialmente immessa nel sistema idrico.

I dati del referendum, appena concluso, rappresentano una grande sconfitta per la parte più progressista del settore agricolo e per gli ambientalisti che ambivano a una politica agricola più rispettosa dell’ambiente, della biodiversità e anche della salute pubblica. I promotori avevano indicato livelli preoccupanti di pesticidi nell’acqua e conseguenti danni a piante, insetti e altri animali. Mentre il governo sperava in un doppio “No”, sostenendo che le proposte minano la sovranità alimentare del Paese.
Un’altra grande occasione per l’ambiente è andata in fumo.
