Lo scrive l’Independent, citando dati raccolti dalla Nasa, secondo i quali al momento ci sono 6.902 focolai attivi in Angola e 3.395 in Repubblica democratica del Congo. Mentre in Brasile sono 2.127. Non si tratta, ovviamente, di una gara. Piuttosto del tentativo di non perdere di vista il quadro generale.
Utilizzando i dati della Firms (Fire Information for Resource Management System) dell’agenzia spaziale americana, Wired ha costruito questa mappa, che rappresenta gli incendi attivi nell’ultima settimana:
I dati sono stati estratti nella mattinata di mercoledì 28 agosto. Ogni punto rappresenta un incendio. Come si può vedere, le aree più colpite sono l’Africa sub-sahariana e la zona dell’Amazzonia. Ma i pompieri sono al lavoro anche in Indonesia, per restare nella fascia della foresta pluviale. Oltre che, più a nord, nella Cinaorientale e in Ucraina. I satelliti della Nasa, infine, hanno individuato diversi incendi anche nell’Italiameridionale.
Vale la pena ripetere che non si sta tentando di dar vita ad una stupida gara a chi brucia di più, né altrettanto ovviamente di negare il problema in Amazzonia. L’idea è semmai quella di allargare il quadro e portare l’attenzione su un fenomeno, quello degli incendi nella foresta tropicale, molto spesso legato all’attività agricola. Si brucia cioè il bosco per avere terreno da coltivare.
Il punto è che queste foreste sono importanti per la produzione di ossigeno e nell’azione di contrasto al climate change. E la deforestazione in Amazzoniasi sta avvicinando al punto di non ritorno, superato il quale la foresta pluviale si trasformerà in savana. Oltre che sull’emergenza, gli aiutipromessi dall’Europa e rifiutati dal Brasiledovrebbero prendere in considerazione anche questi aspetti del problema.
