Un ghiacciaio himalayano è crollato in un fiume a Nord dell’India innalzando il livello dell’acqua e provocando un’inondazione che ha spazzato via una diga idroelettrica e costretto l’evacuazione dei villaggi a valle.
Il numero di vittime non è ancora stato confermato, ma nell’incidente potrebbero aver perso la vita oltre 100 persone, tra cui gli operai che lavoravano alla diga.
I testimoni hanno riferito che tutto è successo molto velocemente, senza che nessuno avesse il tempo di scappare o avvisare gli abitanti dei villaggi. All’improvviso si è alzato un muro di polvere, acqua e rocce e la valanga ha travolto la valle, situata a 500 km a nord di Nuova Delhi. Al momento diverse squadre di soccorso sono al lavoro.
Non mancando le polemiche: secondo gli esperti, il disastro è legato alla costruzione della diga, che sta compromettendo la natura dell’Himalaya.
“Quando ero ministro avevo chiesto che l’Himalaya fosse considerato un luogo molto sensibile, e che non si costrissero progetti energetici sul Gange e sui suoi principali affluenti”, ha dichiarato Uma Bharti, ex ministro indiano per le risorse idriche e alto dirigente del partito di Modi.
“Questo disastro richiede ancora una volta un serio esame della frenesia della costruzione di dighe idroelettriche in questa regione eco-sensibile. Il governo non dovrebbe più ignorare gli avvertimenti degli esperti e smettere di costruire progetti di energia idroelettrica e vaste reti autostradali in questo fragile ecosistema”, ha invece dichiarato Ranjan Panda, volontario del Combat Climate Change Network che si occupa di tutela dell’acqua e dell’ambiente.
