Il ministero egiziano del turismo e delle antichità ha annunciato la scoperta di altri 14 sarcofagi perfettamente conservati nella necropoli di Saqqara a sud del Cairo, portando il numero totale a 27. Secondo gli archeologi che lavorano nel sito, le bare sono rimaste “nascoste” per 2.500 anni, nonostante si trovassero a soli 16 km (10 miglia) a sud delle famose piramidi di Giza.
I sarcofagi riccamente intagliati e decorati trovati più di recente sono stati portati alla luce durante uno scavo archeologico in corso vicino all’antica capitale dell’Egitto, Menfi, un sito del patrimonio mondiale dell’UNESCO. È lo stesso luogo in cui sono stati scoperti 13 esemplari incontaminati la scorsa settimana.
Nella maggior parte dei casi, la vernice e le incisioni originali erano ancora intatte sulla superficie delle bare. Gli scavi continuano e sono attese ulteriori scoperte, secondo il ministro del turismo e delle antichità, il dottor Khaled Al-Anani.
